“Contemporary Tropical Lifestyle Home at Kandana”
The project intends to bring an alternative approach to the conception of middle range Sri Lankan urban house, combining tropical architectural principles, quality material solutions and contemporary design, the residence adheres to environmental and microclimatic philosophies to enhance the architectural design.
Layout of the house is such that all the habitable spaces are interconnected either side of the outdoors. This quality is achieved by designing two linear boxes in an ‘L’ shape towards the rear of the plot. Location of the building in relation to the plot helps generate a pulsating entrance path to the house. The main entrance door is carefully hidden once entering through the gate. Warmly lit garden lights give direction towards the house.
The creative layout of the house gives new perspective on how indoor-outdoor spaces should interact in a tropical climate. The ‘L’ shaped foot print, with garden spaces either side of the two arms, provides maximum surface area of the outer-walls. Most of these surfaces are then clad with timber louvers. These louvers act as the gills of a fish, allowing the building to breathe in cool air.
